John is an ex-Senior Civil Servant with a career starting in the private sector in HR and moving through the Departments for Employment and Education, and the Cabinet Office, and finally Strategy Director at the Independent Living Fund.

His has led national work on skills and qualifications policy, reform of the UK training system, age discrimination and disability reform, advising Ministers in successive governments. He has worked with employers academics and trade unions in many different industries, with the Scots and Welsh Governments and in Europe.

He holds several non executive and trustee roles in charities supporting disabled people, homeless teenagers, counselling of children, and vocational education. He is a secondary school governor and a Rotarian.

With his wife and two teenage boys John is an active runner and cyclist, shares an allotment, and plays keyboards in two rock bands.
