What We Took Away from the AELP National Conference 2026
Posted 29 June 2026
The AELP National Conference 2026 brought together policymakers, providers and sector leaders at a time when many organisations are actively working through change.
Conversations across the two days focused on evolving approaches to standards, assessment and inspection, alongside developments in funding and recent announcements on streamlining and units.
Across sessions and conversations, the same themes kept surfacing: tighter funding, evolving assessment expectations and a growing need to simplify delivery without losing quality. What stood out was the shift from broad discussion to practical considerations. Much of the focus was on what these changes mean for day-to-day delivery, and how organisations are adapting their strategies in response.
Conversations from our Stand
Across the event, colleagues from NOCN Group spent time with providers and partners at Stand 5. These conversations were open and constructive, with many organisations sharing similar challenges around delivery models, assessment approaches and managing change alongside provision.
There was a clear sense of commitment to the role the sector plays in supporting learners, employers and communities. While there are pressures, there is a strong focus on maintaining quality and ensuring positive outcomes.
Our Switch With Confidence campaign provided a useful starting point for discussions, particularly with organisations considering their current arrangements. The campaign includes:
- Free centre approval (saving £700)
- Free qualification mapping
- Dedicated expert support
These are areas where providers are looking to save time and reduce administrative burden.
The 9-Dart challenge also provided a lighter moment across the two days and proved to be a hit with attendees as participants battled it out over the two days for the top score. Congratulations to Joel McNeil, who scored the top spot and walked away with our Tech Bundle prize worth over £400!

Gen Z Won’t Wait
As sponsors of the Gen Z Zone, we were pleased to support a series of workshops focused on understanding the next generation of learners.
On Day Two, Laura Randall, Head of Business Development at NOCN Group and Ross Radford, Apprenticeship Quality Manager for NCG, led a session titled: Gen Z won’t wait: what apprenticeships must do differently. The workshop explored common assumptions about Gen Z and reflected on how learner expectations are evolving.

One of the key themes was the importance of aligning delivery with these expectations. Discussions highlighted areas such as engagement, retention and the overall learner experience. They also reflected on current sector changes and evolving assessment approaches, and what they mean in practice. The session’s key themes were captured brilliantly by Ozzy at Live Doodle, and we’re excited to carry these conversations forward.

International Insights – India in Focus
Our Chief Executive, Graham Hasting-Evans, joined Jonathan Ledger, International Education Strategy Lead for the UK Government, to lead a session on the India skills market.

Drawing on NOCN Group's experience, Graham focused on the importance of building local context, building relationships and taking a considered approach to entering new markets.
A key message was the importance of clarity, understanding where organisations can add value and ensuring that any activity is aligned with local needs and structures.

Closing Thoughts
The conference reflected a sector that is working through change in a practical and measured way. While there are uncertainties, there is also a strong focus on collaboration, sharing insight and adapting approaches where needed.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak with us over the two days and contribute to the discussions. We will continue to share further reflections in the coming weeks.
