Notification: NOCN Suite of Forest School Qualifications

Dear Colleague,

As part of our commitment to providing qualifications in line with industry requirements, we regularly review and develop new qualifications across all occupations.

We are writing to inform you of important updates to NOCN’s Suite of Forest School qualifications, which will come into effect from 1st September 2026.

These changes follow a comprehensive review in collaboration with the Forest School Association (FSA), alongside valuable feedback from centres, tutors, and trainers. Our aim is to ensure the qualifications remain current, high-quality, and reflective of best practice within the Forest School sector.

NOCN Level 3 Certificate for Forest School Leaders (603/2994/4) to be replaced with NOCN Level 3 Certificate for Forest School Leaders (610/7382/9)

Following a full review, this qualification will be replaced from 1st September 2026.

Key updates include:

  • Revised unit titles
  • Updated Learning Outcomes (LOs) and Assessment Criteria (ACs)
  • Enhanced indicative content

Please note:
The GLH, TQT, and credit value remain unchanged
The revised qualification maintains its robust structure while better aligning with current Forest School practice and expectations

Level 2 Award for Forest School Assistants (603/2996/8)

In light of the updates to the Level 3 qualification, there have been amendments to the Assessment Criteria (ACs) and scope of training for this qualification.

These changes ensure:

  • Clear progression between Level 2 and Level 3, if appropriate but not a requirement.
  • Alignment with updated practice and expectations within Forest School delivery.
  • Amended minimum age requirement.

Level 1 Award in Forest School Ethos and Principles (603/3234/7)

Based on feedback gathered via the Forest School Association (FSA), the following updates have been made:

  • Amendment to credit value
  • Revised GLH and TQT
  • Amended minimum age requirement

These changes better reflect the expected learning time and support a more accurate representation of the qualification’s content and purpose.
