New Online Course to Support Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Construction

We are proud to announce the launch of our new Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in Construction online course - developed in collaboration with Design & Build UK and Women in Construction.

This six-part course supports our shared commitment to building a more inclusive, representative and forward-thinking construction sector.

Construction remains one of the UK’s least diverse industries, yet it is one built entirely on people: teamwork, shared expertise and collective problem-solving. As the sector continues to modernise, attract new talent and respond to the needs of diverse communities, embedding EDI practice is essential for long-term success. This new course provides learners and employers with the knowledge, awareness and confidence to drive meaningful cultural change across the industry.

The course is made up of six sessions of approximately 30 minutes each. It can be completed online and is accessible on mobile or tablet devices. The course has been developed to encourage interactive knowledge checks, practical activities and self-reflection.

What Learners Will Gain

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand what EDI means in a construction context, including terminology, workplace behaviours and sector-specific challenges.
  • Recognise why EDI matters for individuals, teams and the wider industry, with links to wellbeing, productivity and retention.
  • Identify the benefits of promoting EDI, both on-site and within construction businesses, including safer working environments and stronger team performance.
  • Understand the law around discrimination, including rights, responsibilities and real-world implications.
  • Recognise unconscious bias, its impact on decision-making and ways to reduce it.
  • Understand the role of mental health and wellbeing in creating supportive, inclusive workplaces.
  • Learn how to create a positive EDI culture, from leadership actions to everyday behaviours.

The course has been designed for anyone working in construction, and is relevant to apprentices, learners, tradespeople, site teams, leaders and business owners. For those starting out, it offers essential guidance on what an inclusive, respectful workplace looks like. For employers and managers, it provides practical tools to build stronger teams, improve staff retention and ensure a safe and supportive environment for everyone.

Accessible, Flexible and Built for the Future

We want this course to be as far-reaching as possible, and so have developed the course to be flexible, accessible, and scalable, with a clear pathway to expand into a Level 2 qualification.

The course content is ready now and available to purchase for £25. Full details are available via The Hub.

Everyone who completes the course will receive an NOCN Course Certificate.

Strengthening the Sector Through Collaboration

This qualification is part of our ongoing, long-standing partnership with Women in Construction and Design & Build UK. Together, we are working to ensure the industry not only attracts diverse talent but creates environments where everyone can thrive.

“True inclusion is something we all need to actively build into the culture of our industry. This course gives people the practical understanding and confidence they need to make that happen on every site or workplace. By helping learners recognise the value of different perspectives and the benefits of respectful, supportive environments, NOCN Group is committed to strengthening teams, improve communication and building a better construction sector for everyone.”

Tracey Patmore, NOCN Group Head of Products

“Construction has enormous potential, but we can only unlock it fully when everyone feels they have a place and a voice. This course is an important step in helping the industry understand what inclusion really looks like day to day - beyond policies and into real behaviours. By giving people the skills to challenge bias, support colleagues and build respectful workplaces, we create a sector that attracts and retains the talent it needs for the future. Inclusion isn’t an add-on; it’s essential to progress.”

Michaela Wain, Managing Director Women in Construction

Through this collaborative work, we are excited to help shape a construction sector that reflects the communities it serves, and creates opportunities for everyone.
