The occupation of a Plant Operative involves checking, preparing, and operating construction machinery used on various construction sites, including railways, demolition, and utility works. This apprenticeship covers four main types of plant: 360-degree excavators, dumpers/dump trucks, forklifts, and ride-on rollers. Operatives learn to operate these machines to perform tasks such as digging, shaping ground, compacting materials, and transporting construction materials. In addition to operating machinery, they are responsible for maintaining and cleaning equipment, guiding other plant, and ensuring safety on site. Plant operatives work in a range of construction and civil engineering environments, including high-profile infrastructure projects, and are expected to manage their machines responsibly, with a strong focus on safety.
