NOCN is a market-leading independent End Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO) who have been successfully delivering End Point Assessments since 2017. NOCN is at the forefront of apprenticeship reforms including the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy in the UK, working in partnership with employers, Further Education colleges, Training Providers and skills experts to develop a range of standards and assessments for new apprenticeships.
NOCN is also an established Ofqual regulated Awarding Organisation, bringing this level of quality assurance to its End Point Assessment provision.
Typical job titles - Automatic Door Technician/Engineer, Automatic Pedestrian Door Technician/Engineer, Automatic Door Service Technician/Engineer, Automatic Pedestrian Door Service Technician/Engineer
Occupational profile - The Powered Pedestrian Door (commonly referred to as Automatic Doors) Installer and Servicer is a specialist occupation, involved in planning, preparing and safely carrying out work activities in door automation. An installer/servicer will be able to work on a range of powered doors such as sliding, swing, folding, balanced and revolving.
The work is carried out in a variety of applications supporting business activities in a wide variety of sectors. Providing barrier free building access supports businesses in meeting the requirements of the equality act, building security, providing user comfort and contributing to meeting environmental obligations. Generally powered pedestrian doors are found in buildings, for example offices, residential property, hospitals, transport interchanges, banks, education facilities and supermarkets however, they are also common in cruise ships and large portable trailers such as medical screening trailers. Installations can take place on new building sites, during refurbishment of buildings and in end user occupied buildings.
Key activities are: the installation, routine maintenance, fault finding and repair, commissioning and de- commissioning of powered pedestrian doorsets. They have a thorough understanding of the engineering principles and safe operation of powered pedestrian doorsets. They work without immediate supervision, and liaise effectively with other trades and with end users. The safety of themselves, work colleagues and ensuring that powered pedestrian doors used by the general public and employees are efficient and safe to use is a key responsibility.
NOCN works in partnership with employers and Training Providers to provide a quality-first End Point Assessment (EPA). End Point Assessment is the final stage of the apprenticeship where the apprentice demonstrates the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours gained on-programme to an independent End Point Assessor.
The required Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours of the Powered pedestrian door installer and service engineer apprenticeship standard will be fully communicated to the apprentice at the start of their apprenticeship, in preparation for End Point Assessment. End Point Assessment is carried out independently by qualified NOCN End Point Assessors to ensure a quality robust End Point Assessment you can trust.
The required Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours of the Powered pedestrian door installer and service engineer apprenticeship standard that the apprentice will be required to learn during the on-programme phase of the apprenticeship, are found on the Institute for Apprenticeships & Technical Education website. Click the link below to see the apprenticeship standard and assessment plan in further detail:
The EPA should only commence once the employer is confident that the apprentice has developed all the knowledge, skills and behaviours defined in the apprenticeship standard. Employers may wish to take advice from a training provider. Apprentices without English and mathematics at level 2 must achieve level 1 English and mathematics and take the tests for level 2 prior to taking their EPA Apprentices must have compiled a log book containing sufficient evidence to demonstrate knowledge, skills and behaviours that will be assessed by the EPA interview (see annex A). Evidence sources may include, a record of the various door types worked on and the tasks completed by the apprentice, such as fault finding, installation and maintenance; examples of risk assessments undertaken, records of supervisor reviews and sign off and any supporting photographs and documents.
There will be three stages; (Knowledge Test, Practical Skills Observation and a Interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence) to the EPA that will assess the overall knowledge, skills and behavioural competence of the individual, according to the level stated by the Powered pedestrian door installer and service engineer apprenticeship standard.
Knowledge Test
Will be taken online using NOCN’s existing platform, and contain 40 multi-choice questions, each with four options, with a maximum time limit of 45 minutes. Tests must be sat under invigilated controlled conditions, with a maximum of 16 apprentices per invigilator.
Practical Skills Observation
The Practical Observation will be carried out at the apprentice’s place of work. A synoptic observational assessment of an apprentice completing practical tasks typically undertaken by a powered pedestrian door installer and servicer, assessed by an independent assessor from NOCN.Apprentices will be assessed completing the installation, commissioning, servicing and fault finding on both automatic swing door and sliding door products, in line with written instructions provided, in controlled conditions. Independent assessors may observe up to a maximum of 4 apprentices at any one time, to allow for cost effective use of resources whilst maintaining quality. To support the observation, the independent assessor will ask 10 ‘open’ oral questions during or after task completion to assess underpinning knowledge.
During the process the apprentice will be expected to demonstrate to the assessor the application of the core knowledge, skills and behaviours of specific job related knowledge and skills as outlined in Annex 1.
Apprentices will be observed and will be assessed against both the core and their chosen specific job role option KSBs as identified within the standard.
Interview supported by a portfolio of evidence.
An interview conducted by an independent assessor from NOCN, on a one-to-one basis with the apprentice, will assess the apprentice on knowledge, skills and behaviours, underpinned by the apprentice’s log book. The interview must last a maximum of 60 minutes. The independent assessor will ask 10 standardised questions, with follow up questions to probe further or seek clarification as required. Questions must be open, competency based and synoptic in design, that is each assessing against more than one knowledge, skill or behaviour statement. For example: ‘When commissioning a swing door, what factors need to be considered when determining the opening and closing speed of the door?’ The answers to questions must be documented by the independent assessor. NOCN will develop a bank of standardised questions, to ensure sufficient variation, in consultation with representative employers to ensure consistency. Apprentices can bring their log book to the interview to refer to and show the independent assessor evidence contained within it to help illustrate their answers.
NOCN organises the EPA at a suitable time for the employer, training provider and apprentice. We then book the independent expert assessor who will deliver the EPA.
Because arranging a quality EPA involves a number of people and organisations, NOCN requires a minimum of three months to ensure all elements of EPA are in place including, contracting, invoicing and scheduling.
When the Gateway stage is reached, NOCN will expect the employer or the Training Provider to inform NOCN and to make the final booking for the End Point Assessment. The End Point Assessment for the apprenticeship standard will take place after the apprentice has completed a minimum of 20% off-the-job training, and achieved all required mandatory elements of the apprenticeship.
NOCN will provide the employer and Training Provider guidance on the pre-requisite requirements needed to be submitted to NOCN and how the End Point Assessment will be undertaken.
When the Gateway stage is reached, NOCN will expect the employer or their Training Provider to inform NOCN and to make the final booking for the End Point Assessment. The End Point Assessment management system allows the apprentice/s data to be added to the system, and this data will match the ESFA database. All pre-requisites for the apprentice will be added to the system before the End Point Assessment booking.
NOCN has a range of useful EPA resources available and our friendly team is available to offer expert advice and support for both Employers and training providers.
On successful completion, NOCN will issue an EPA grade notification and apply to the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) to produce the final apprenticeship certificate.
As a leading non-profit organisation we ensure our charges are below the maximum 20% of the total apprenticeship. A pre EPA fee is charged at the contracting phase to secure support materials and assessment booking. The remaining balance for the EPA is charged upon Gateway entry and EPA booking. NOCN applies a flexible approach to pricing based upon cohort size and delivery model.
