The Learning and Skills Teacher (LST) apprenticeship standard outlines the role of educators in the Further Education and Skills Sector (FES), primarily teaching students aged 16 and above. While most LSTs work with this age group, some may teach 14–16-year-olds in alternative provision settings, subject to Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) approval.

LSTs are dual professionals, having first achieved competence in a vocational or subject specialism before training as teachers. They are responsible for planning and delivering current, relevant, and challenging learning experiences that inspire students to engage and achieve their full potential. In their daily work, LSTs interact with students of diverse ages, abilities, and backgrounds, as well as with colleagues and employers. They must be adaptable and innovative, tailoring their teaching approaches to meet the varied needs of their students, including those with special educational needs.

LSTs are expected to maintain high standards of professional conduct, continually develop their own skills, and may have responsibilities that include managing others and overseeing budgets.
