An Introduction to Working Safely with Electric Plant

This introductory awareness course takes a manufacturer- and technology-agnostic approach to electric plant, focusing on the core principles that apply across different makes, models and charging solutions.

Course Content

  • Understand electrification in construction plant and how it differs from ICE machinery.
  • Identify key electrical components, including LV and HV systems.
  • Recognise electrical hazards such as shock, arc flash, and stored energy.
  • Identify High Voltage -HV - components, warning signs, and safety-critical areas (e.g. orange cables).
  • Carry out electric-specific pre-use checks in line with manufacturer guidance.
  • Understand site charging systems, including grid supply, charging stations, and BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems).
  • Differentiate between AC and DC charging and select the correct method.
  • Apply safe charging procedures, including connection, monitoring, and disconnection.
  • Follow manufacturer instructions and isolation procedures at all times.
  • Apply good battery care and charging practices to support safe operation and longevity.
  • Recognise emergency actions required in electrical incidents.
