This unit is based on NOS Unit EUSEPUS044 Location and identification of underground utility services in the electricity power utilities covering it in full.
The achievement of this unit is a mandatory requirement in the Level 2 Diploma in Drilling Operations qualification Pathway 5 – Land Drilling – Lead Driller and is crucial to ensuring the safety of the operation. It is extremely important that the candidates undertaking the qualification can demonstrate their competence against all the criteria within the unit.
The unit contains a significant amount of performance and knowledge which should be evidenced in the context of the unit title Locating and Identifying Underground Services. For clarification and the avoidance of doubt where a criteria states ‘work activity’ it is referring to locating and identifying underground services and not the overall drilling activity. To prove competence the candidate must provide evidence of performance and knowledge, the preferred method to achieve this is through direct observation and questioning by the Assessor. The unit does not specifically state that the use of CAT and Genny is required but if this equipment is available, it is strongly recommended that it should be used and evidenced to meet the criteria. As this is not the only means to locate and identify underground services it cannot be mandated but whatever method or equipment is used it should provide suitable and sufficient evidence of competence.
There is no specific training mandated to achieve the qualification but in high-risk areas such as this it is important to ensure that candidates have received suitable instruction regarding the activity to be undertaken and the equipment to be used. Where there is evidence of training completed it can be very useful to include as supplementary evidence supporting the decision to confirm competence. Maintaining competence is equally important and refresher training and renewals recorded as CPD is in accordance with industry best practice. MP Awards would strongly recommend that training in relation to the use of equipment is undertaken, recorded and confirmed.

Assessors are reminded that when delivering this unit, the evidence used must relate to Locating and Identifying Underground Services, the achievement of the qualification will confirm the candidate’s capability to undertake this activity. It is important to ensure that there has been a robust assessment conducted, the Assessor is responsible for this which will minimise the risk of incidents occurring.
