Aim
The purpose of this unit is to for learners to develop skills and understand techniques to operate digital systems for straightforward or routine activities; to respond appropriately to common errors and problems and review own use of digital systems. Learners will also develop an understanding of computers and digital systems and aspects of security.
The learner will operate a range of digital systems that allow for and provide different set-ups for different user needs in the workplace. Users will want to keep data safe and be able to access it quickly and easily. File management helps users to do this and is an important and integral part of running an efficient digital system. They will also know about and use different storage media. Once stored, data will be kept safe from unauthorised users and from corruption. Information security and integrity are central to any organisation because of the risk and frequent reports about lost data files, hackers and viruses. The learner will explore this concept as well as how to implement security features.
The coverage required by the unit could include start and shut down procedures, interface features such as window, dialogue box, scrollbar, system settings e.g. screen resolution, and communication service, e.g. Wifi or mobile device and digital systems, which will vary but include both input and output devices. File and folder handling together with various storage media will also be considered. The general principles of staying safe on-line together with security of information will be discussed and covered as well as guidelines and procedures that are likely to be set by an employer or organisation for health and safety, data protection and copyright. Issues relating to working safely and physical stress could also be considered. ‘Responding to problems’ could look at the limit of the learner’s own understanding of problems and providing evidence that they know when and where to ask for expert advice.
